Confidentiality and Ethics

The counselling service at the Maya Centre is accredited by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) which ensures that our service is well-managed and our counselling is of a high standard.

Confidentiality

All personal material shared with your counsellor is strictly confidential within the Centre. No information will be disclosed to anyone else without telling you, except in exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances may arise when the counsellor has good grounds for believing that someone may cause serious harm to themselves or others, or have harm caused to her. Wherever possible any decision to break confidentiality is made only after speaking with that person. In order to offer a professional service we need to have access to medical cover should this be necessary. We therefore require all clients to give consent that their GP is informed when they begin counselling.

Code of ethics

The Maya Centre is a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). This means that we are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy. All our paid counsellors are trained and in regular supervision. We also provide voluntary placements for counsellors in training and those recently qualified who are supervised within the Centre. If you have any concerns about your counselling you should speak to your counsellor first if you can. If you are concerned about any aspect of the service, you can follow the procedure outlined in our complaints procedure, a copy of which is in the waiting area.
