Clients can choose whether they would like to join a group or receive individual counselling. Currently we have a group for women over 50 held here at the Maya Centre. If we can raise the funds, we would like to run a group for women affected by domestic violence to take place in the Centre. These are ongoing groups for up to a year. Clients are asked to commit to coming regularly.
We are very proud to announce that, with funding from The Wates
Foundation, we are now offering women who fit our criteria the possibility of receiving
their counselling in either Somali or Arabic. If you have any enquiries about this
service, or would like to refer someone, please contact Fatima Mohamed on 020 7281 2673 or
email her on fadumo.mohamed@mayacentre.org.uk
We work with women for whom violence has been or is a significant part
of their lives, providing individual or group therapy. We also work with front-line
providers of services targeting women affected by domestic violence, providing training or
supervision.
We aim to improve the mental health of women over 50 in the community
who are living in conditions of deprivation and who may not see themselves as candidates
for psychological help. By offering either individual counselling or group work, which
strengthens inner resources and breaks down isolation, we can help clients live more
resourcefully.
We acknowledge that many Irish clients continue to experience racism
and exclusion from many support services. We provide a service where issues of individual
and group identity can be explored and are recognised as important factors impacting the
development of positive mental health.
While all our counsellors are sensitive to issues facing women from
Black and ethnic minority communities, we offer Black and African-Caribbean clients the
choice of seeing someone from their own culture if they feel it would be more helpful in
exploring issues of identity, racism and exclusion.
We offer Turkish-speaking women whose English
is not fluent the choice of receiving counselling in their
mother tongue. We believe that by offering this choice, we
can reach out to even more women who might otherwise be unable
to access our service. If you have any enquiries about this
service, or would like to refer someone, please contact Nilay
Nagle on 020 7281 2728.
As the Maya Centre targets the most disadvantaged sections of society,
we place great emphasis on our outreach services. The counselling staff will be happy to
visit any group or agency. We see ourselves as having a role working alongside other
organisations, planners and user groups, in order to raise awareness of the efficacy of
counselling/psychotherapy to our client group. |
