While VAWG issues exist, women’s mental health will suffer as a result. Gendered violence is intrinsically linked to women’s mental health and wellbeing.
The Maya Centre has been open for 40 years providing counselling for women.
Women do not feel safe walking home at night
Health data has recently demonstrated an increase in demand for services supporting women experiencing violence and abuse. Statistics are showing that gender-based violence is sadly increasing.
Our Maya 40 celebration was a celebration of our service and our achievements, but it was also a moment for us to acknowledge the amount of work that still needs to be done. It highlighted the need for greater measures to be set up to eliminate instances of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and how sadly this is still a widespread national issue today in 2024. In fact, police are reporting that this is a national emergency.
The Maya Centre, alongside creating safe spaces for women, is campaigning to raise awareness of VAWG issues.
The majority of our service users have experienced some form of violence, and are survivors of domestic abuse, sexual abuse or honour-based violence.
To mark our 40th anniversary, The Maya Centre, alongside creating safe spaces for women, is campaigning to raise awareness of VAWG issues. Join our movement to campaign for a safer world for women and girls.
Our campaign is in memory of the women lost to violence.
