We are proud to be a charity led by women, for women. Our teams of forty women — including trustees and staff — reflects the rich diversity of the communities we serve. Many of our service users are from migrant, refugee, or Global Majority backgrounds. It is an honour to support them as they move through stages of healing , recovery and building resilience.
The Maya Centre has been here since 1984. What began as a small mental health helpline for women on low income in Islington has grown into a trusted charity offering free support in many forms.
Today, we provide one-to-one counselling and group therapy using psychodynamic and intercultural approaches, as well as mind-body therapies, psychoeducation workshops, and specialist services for women affected by domestic abuse, Irish women, and Black and minoritised women. Our services are available to women from Islington , as well as women from other North London boroughs, including , Barnet, Camden, Enfield ,Hackney, and Haringey, and are offered in a wide range of community languages.
For over 40 years, women have helped shape who we are today. We have stood alongside women on low incomes whose mental health has been impacted by depression, anxiety, violence, discrimination, racism, bereavement and the everyday challenges of life.
We know that women’s mental health is shaped by many different experiences, from sexism, abuse, and trauma to big life changes, isolation, and exclusion. That’s why our team of experienced female counsellors and facilitators create a safe and supportive space where you can feel heard, understood, and empowered to take steps towards healing and change.
We imagine a world where every woman can put her mental health first, living with dignity, equality, and safety, free from abuse, exclusion, or discrimination of any kind.
