Welcoming President Catherine Connolly & Supporting Irish Women’s Mental Health in London

On Monday 18th May, Mary Heffernan, Clinical Lead of the Irish Women’s Service at The Maya Centre, was warmly welcomed to the Irish Embassy in London. She joined others to mark the first official visit of Her Excellency Catherine Connolly, President of Ireland.

President Connolly, who was elected in October 2025, is only the third woman to hold this role. Her visit was a proud and meaningful moment. In her speech, she spoke about the strength and impact of Irish women living in Britain. She gave special thanks to their contributions, especially in the National Health Service, where so many have worked with care and dedication.

During the event, Mary had the chance to speak with the President and share the work of the Irish Women’s Service at The Maya Centre. She also expressed our deep thanks for the ongoing support we receive through the Irish Emigrant Support Programme. This funding helps us continue our work with women who need support the most. We were also glad to be joined by Ambassador Martin Fraser and his team, who give us such generous support.

At The Maya Centre, the Irish Women’s Service provides a safe, caring space for Irish women and women of Irish descent in London. The service offers counselling and emotional support to women who may be feeling alone, struggling with their mental health, or going through a difficult time. It is a place where women can feel listened to, understood, and supported as they heal and grow.

The President’s visit was part of a wider trip to the UK. While in London, she also met His Majesty the King, who accepted her invitation to visit Ireland next year. She then travelled on to Leeds to meet more Irish community groups and learn about their work.

We are so proud to see the impact of women supporting women, both here at The Maya Centre and across the Irish community.
