At The Maya Centre, we believe that caring for women’s mental health means creating safe spaces where women can connect, relax, and try new experiences. As part of our work providing counselling for women, we know that healing can happen in many ways, through support, through community, and sometimes through a simple moment of peace on the water.
On 27 November 2025, in partnership with Islington Mind under the Pathway to Mental Health Recovery, we took eight women on a special boat trip at the London Canal Museum. From the moment we arrived at 12pm, the day felt calm and welcoming. As we set off through the Kings Cross Lock, everyone enjoyed the beautiful views, warm drinks, and a delicious packed lunch. One of the women even joined Bethlehem, our Women’s Engagement and Support Worker in helping to open and close the lock gates, which became a fun and empowering moment.
Throughout the journey, Jane from the London Canal Museum shared stories about the history of the canals. We passed Granary Square and travelled through the Islington Tunnel, the longest canal tunnel in London. The group was curious and engaged, asking questions and taking in the quiet beauty around us.

What touched us most was how much the women didn’t want the experience to end. Some said, “I could stay on this boat forever.” Others asked when we could come back again. After the boat ride, we enjoyed a tour of the museum and continued learning together. The weather was lovely, making the whole afternoon feel even more special.
For many women who face anxiety or other challenges, getting out into nature and sharing time with others can be deeply uplifting. One woman told us that since the trip, she has been going out every day because it helped her feel more confident and motivated. Moments like this remind us why The Maya Centre creates opportunities not only for counselling but for joy, connection, and new experiences.
The trip was such a success that we are already planning another boat journey. We are grateful for the wonderful feedback and for the chance to see our community thrive together.
