Description

Unshaken Roots: Speak Up, Speak Out is a 6‑session psychoeducation group created for Black women and Black Mixed Heritage women of African ancestry across the diaspora. The group offers a culturally rooted, supportive space to reflect, learn, and heal alongside others who share similar lived experiences.

This group recognises the impact of lived stress, silence, and disconnection on Black women’s wellbeing, and centres healing practices that affirm identity, dignity, and voice.

Purpose of the Group

The purpose of Unshaken Roots is to provide a safe and nurturing space where participants can:

  • Reconnect with themselves and their bodies
  • Explore their relationship with voice, expression, and self‑advocacy
  • Release what no longer serves them
  • Strengthen their sense of identity, dignity, and agency
  • Feel affirmed, heard, and supported within community

Participants are supported to reflect on their experiences while developing greater self‑trust, clarity, and confidence moving forward.

Our Approach

The group is rooted in Kuumba Healing, an African‑centred approach that values creativity, movement, voice, and collective healing. Kuumba Healing honours cultural wisdom and community connection as essential pathways to wellbeing.

Each session may include:

  • Psychoeducation in a culturally relevant and accessible way
  • Gentle reflective exercises
  • Creative expression, movement, and grounding practices
  • Opportunities to share, listen, and learn from one another

You do not need to have any prior experience with therapy, groups, or creative practices. Participants are always encouraged to engage at their own pace.

Facilitation

The group is facilitated by a qualified and experienced psychotherapist, with expertise in culturally informed, trauma‑aware practice. Care is taken to create a respectful, contained, and supportive environment where participants feel safe to explore and express themselves.

Who the Group Is For

This group is suitable for:

  • Black women and Black Mixed Heritage women
  • Women of African ancestry across the diaspora
  • Those seeking a culturally affirming space for learning, healing, and reconnection

If this feels like something you need, we warmly invite you to make a referral. Spaces are limited to keep the group safe and supportive.
