Description

Family relationships can be a source of love, support, and belonging. They can also be a source of hurt, confusion, and lasting pain. When family experiences have been difficult, their impact can follow us into adulthood, affecting how we feel about ourselves and how we connect with others.

The Spaces Between Love, Harm, and Self: Understanding Family Complexity is a 10-week therapeutic group that offers a safe and supportive space to explore the impact of family relationships and past experiences.

Together, we will reflect on how childhood experiences, family roles, attachment patterns, abuse, bullying, conflict, and relationship dynamics may continue to shape our lives today. Through shared learning and guided discussion, participants can develop greater understanding, self-compassion, and healthier ways of relating to themselves and others.

What Will We Explore?

This group may be helpful if you would like to better understand:

  • Family trauma and family conflict
  • Childhood trauma and adverse experiences
  • Toxic or unhealthy relationships
  • The impact of abuse, neglect, or bullying
  • Attachment styles and relationship patterns
  • Boundaries, communication, and self-worth
  • Family roles and expectations
  • Personal choice, autonomy, and identity

Participants will be encouraged to explore how these experiences may influence:

  • Adult relationships
  • Family life and parenting
  • Separation and relationship breakdown
  • Self-esteem and confidence
  • Coping strategies and emotional wellbeing
  • Feelings of responsibility, guilt, or obligation within families

What Might You Gain From the Group?

We recognise that every woman’s experience is unique. While everyone’s journey will be different, the group aims to provide opportunities for:

  • A safe, confidential space for reflection and discussion
  • Support from a qualified female therapist
  • Connection with others who may have experienced similar challenges
  • Greater awareness of family dynamics and their impact
  • Improved understanding of relationship patterns and boundaries
  • Increased confidence in making choices that feel right for you
  • Stronger self-worth and resilience
  • Healthier ways of connecting with others
  • Support in maintaining meaningful family relationships where desired

The group is not about telling participants what they should do about their family relationships. Instead, it is about creating space to explore experiences, develop understanding, and make informed choices that support wellbeing.

About Group Therapy

Group therapy is a safe and supportive form of counselling where women come together to share, learn, and grow.

Like one-to-one counselling, group therapy offers a space to talk openly about your experiences. What makes group therapy unique is the opportunity to connect with others. Some women may have experiences that feel familiar to your own, while others may offer different perspectives that help you see things in a new way.

Many women find comfort in knowing they are not alone and discover that hearing and sharing experiences can be a powerful part of healing.

All sessions are facilitated by qualified female therapists with specialist experience in supporting women and leading therapeutic groups.
